To wrap up the Great Depression unit, we watched portions of The Grapes of Wrath. On Monday we will begin the WWII unit.
Today was a review day for the Quarter Final tomorrow. The review sheet is below, as well as the organization sheet for the essay portion of the test.
Today was spent learning from the New Deal pamphlets students assembled on Friday. If absent, please come in, get the pamphlets for your class, and complete the notes sheet in the binder.
Work was done to complete the New Deal program pamphlet project assigned yesterday. Below is the make-up assignment for students who were absent today.
First, students listened to FDR's first Fireside Chat (radio addresses that communicated his policies to the American people). Next, students examined how the New Deal affected women and African-Americans. This information can be found in the textbook starting on p. 718. Students also started finding information on their assigned topic for the group project for tomorrow. The make up assignment for absent students for this project can be found below.
We started class by comparing Hoover's and FDR's view of the role of government. See the primary source below and use it to answer the questions on p. 53 of the binder. From there, we transition into a discussion of Roosevelt's New Deal. The notes video below was used to complete the notes sheets on p. 54-55 of the binder. Core Assignment #6 was also handed out today. It is due on Monday.
To further our understanding of the personal side of the Great Depression, students watched the first 25 minutes of the video below. After that, students investigated and evaluated President Hoover's initial responses to the economic catastrophe. This was done using the book and p. 52 of the binder. The quarter 1 project was due today. It is essential to complete this project as soon as possible. Today was devoted to discussing the causes of the Great Depression. The video below was used to guide our discussion - notes should be taken on the first page of the Great Depression/New Deal binder packet (attached below, but a copy can also be found in the file folder in class). Students also read through several stories of the Great Depression in order to grasp the human impact of the economic crisis. Students wrote down some ideas from these stories on p. 50 of the binder.
