Students wrote a practice essay during today's class. The feedback students receive will help them write their final DBQ essay in a few weeks.
For the first part of class today, students worked to examine Japanese Internment from WWII. First, they read through a section in the book (p. 555) to get some background information. Then, they worked on p. 14-15 of the binder that focused on the Supreme Court decision in Korematsu v. US. Below is the DBQ packet for Monday's practice essay.
Today was the final in-class work day for the WWII Dr. Seuss projects. They are due on Tuesday. Core Assignment 7.2 was also handed out today. It is due on Monday.
As a follow up to yesterday's discussion of war turning points, today we explored the events that brought an end to the wars in Europe and in the Pacific. Topics such as D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, island hopping, and the dropping of the atomic bombs were examined. Additionally, we talked about post-war decisions that were made and how they compared to the post-WWI era.
Using the textbook, students read through information concerning the Allied struggles and the wars' turning points in and around 1942. Pages 14-15 of the binder were used to organize information about this topic.
Today's class was devoted to the topic of the home front during WWII. Students read through sections in the book (starting on p. 551) and answered the questions on p. 13 of the binder. We then worked our way through a slide show of propaganda posters from the war in order to talk about additional aspects of the era. Core assignment 7.1 was handed out today. It is due on Wednesday.
Students finished viewing the movie Casablanca and a discussion about its parallels to American foreign policy between WWI and WWII followed.
Students also worked on their Dr. Seuss projects, the due date for which remains April 17. To illustrate the movement of the US from isolation to intervention prior to Pearl Harbor, we began watching the movie Casablanca in which the main character undergoes a similar transformation.
