Today students took the WWII test. The next unit, the Cold War, begins tomorrow.
Today was the review day for the test tomorrow. The review sheet can be found below.
Two topics were covered in today's class.
First, students read through information concerning Japanese internment during WWII and completed the sheet titled "Why Do I Have to Prove My Loyalty" on p. 15. A discussion followed. Next, students examined the decisions made after the war. Page 16 of the binder was used for this portion of the class. Students worked today to gather and organize information about the war in the Pacific. They read through information in the textbook starting on p. 788 and used the Comic Story sheet in their binder. The six boxes of the comic story correspond to the following battles in the Pacific war: 1) Coral Sea, 2) Midway, 3) Guadalcanal, 4) Philippines, 5) Iwo Jima, and 6) Okinawa. In each box, students were to include both a short description of the battle as well as some kind of visual depiction of its main point.
As part of our discussion about the War in Europe, students worked on p. 12 and 13 of their binder. Students examined the War in the Atlantic, the War in North Africa, and the War in the Soviet Union in the following terms: 1) how was this part of the war going badly for the Allies and b) the point at which the war started going well for the Allies. We also briefly discussed D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.
Toward the end of class, students watched portions of a video on the contributions of minorities in the war. Today's main topic was the US home front during WWII. Students used textbook resources and p. 11 in the binder to investigate various aspects of the home front. We then viewed and discussed various WWII propaganda posters and watched a couple WWII-era cartoons. If absent, please complete p. 11 of the binder.
We finished the movie Casablanca and discussed how it serves as an allegory for changing US foreign policy during the 1930s before Pearl Harbor.
Today we discussed America's attitude toward the wars in Europe and the Pacific. The notes video should be used below, along with the appropriate notes sheets in the binder, for absent students to make this up. Toward the end of class we started watching the movie Casablanca, which symbolizes America's shift from isolation to intervention prior to Pearl Harbor in 1941. We will finish this movie tomorrow. To kick off the WWII unit, we discussed the situation with Japan, Italy, and Germany in the 1930s. We also discussed the outbreak of war in 1939 and how bad the early stages of the war were for the Allies.
