To wrap up the Gilded Age unit, we headed back out west to discuss the hardships of farmers. Students worked through p. 18 of their binders while using the information in their textbook on pages 422-424. We then discusses the efforts of farmers to improve their position, especially the goals of the Populist Party.
A friendly reminder that Core Assignment 1.2 is due on Monday and that the Defend/Criticize paper is due on Tuesday. Today's focus was on the social changes in cities during the Gilded Age. Students worked in groups to answer questions and then present answers to the larger class about their assigned topic. The class then wrote down a few of the important aspects of each topic on p. 16-17 of their binder. Core assignment 1.2 was also assigned today. It is due on Monday. A friendly reminder that the paper is due on Tuesday and the Gilded Age test is on Wednesday.
After spending two days on immigration, today we turned our attention to the growing cities of the Gilded Age. As a class, we read through the testimony of a tenement dweller (below) and listed the problems associated with living in Gilded Age tenements. Then, students wrote a paragraph on which problem was the most significant (needed the most immediate attention) and why. This was all done on p. 15 of the binder. Students then began viewing portions of The 1900 House, which depicts life at the turn of the century for a middle class family.
After introducing Gilded Age immigration yesterday, we built off of that today by looking at both individual stories and by analyzing positives and negatives of immigration in the big picture. Students read through immigrant stories and shared their thoughts and feelings. Students also brainstormed and worked collaboratively to analyze positives and negatives of immigration (p. 14 in the binder).
After finishing up our proficiency scale practice from last week, we started our look at immigration during the Gilded Age. We worked our way through a PowerPoint on the issues - absent students should watch the video below and complete the notes sheet on p. 12-13 of their binder. Today was devoted to beginning our work on building essay writing skills. All of this work culminated with the assigning of a paper to be due on Monday, February 5. The assignment sheet can be found on p. 11 in students' binders, but a copy of the sheet can be found below as well. A reminder that the first core assignment is due on Monday!
After briefly reviewing yesterday's examination of labor unions, we devoted today to practicing answering questions and providing responses in a way that will allow students to display their historical understanding on tests and other assessments. The practice sheet can be found below. This was not done for a grade - it was for feedback purposes only. Core Assignment 1.1 was also handed out today. It will be due on Monday.
